In general there are three classes of masonry restoration. The first and most common is the repair of masonry structures due to the attrition of the brick or mortar or adjacent components of metal or concrete. The second is the removal and replacement of masonry to repair water intrusion problems. The third type, which is our favorite, is the historic restoration of masonry structures. In this type of restoration, the owner has made the decision to return the structure to its original condition in most cases following the guidance of the historical committee. All the classes of restoration have their challenges. The first is too safely and effectively access the area of the building that requires repair. Stone Restoration is certified in both static scaffold and swing stage use. We find the most effective method to move men and material to the required location to save our client time and money.
The second area of expertise that we possess is the ability to match the original materials so that the repairs are not visible once completed. We have master masons on staff that source matching brick no matter the age and custom mix mortar colors to match any cement aggregate combination that we come across. Many times retrofit ties are required due to the absence or corrosion to the existing ties. SRA is certified by most retrofit tie manufacturers and we place them and patch so there is no evidence of the work once complete. At the end of the repair the key to an attractive restoration is the cleaning of the façade. Our skilled staff is most proficient at cleaning masonry without using high pressure or dangerous chemicals. The key to cleaning a structure is understanding what to use where and how to mechanically clean. We have many, many structures from almost 200 years old to one year old that we have successfully repaired and renewed. We would be happy to share these with you.
